Edison, NJ (April 13, 2022) – A Turnpike Authority worker sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a tractor-trailer that swerved into a median on the New Jersey Turnpike on Wednesday, April 13th.
The crash took place at about 9:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near mile marker 87.9 in Edison.
55-year-old William Martisch, a resident of Union Beach and a New Jersey Turnpike worker, was conducting operations in the median between the inner and outer roadway when a southbound tractor-trailer transporting a shipping container left the roadway, hit the guard rail, then hit Martisch, and overturned.
Martisch sustained very serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.
The truck operator was unharmed during the accident.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
In New Jersey, tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles share the roadways every day. Being involved in a tractor-trailer accident, however, is completely different from a regular car accident. Even a collision with even a small passenger vehicle can cause serious or even deadly injuries. The immense weight and size of a tractor-trailer, coupled with untrained or fatigued drivers, can easily result in a devastating accident.
It is understandable that victims assume their insurance company will take care of them, and why shouldn’t they? After all, you earnestly pay your premiums each month and ensure that your end of the bargain is upheld. You believed that, if you ever required financial assistance due to any kind of accident, they would step in and do their job.
Sadly, this is not usually the case. It’s important to keep in mind that insurance companies are for-profit businesses and paying you a lot of money, whether you are entitled to it or not, is not in their best interest. Their goal is to turn a profit and the equation they use to do that is a simple one: Collect as much money as possible via premiums, and pay as little as possible in claims.
Personal injury claims, which are filed in civil courts rather than criminal, enable victims to recover compensation to cover the costs of medical treatment, repairs, and lost wages. When victims sustain injuries in collisions as a result of other drivers’ actions, they should contact an Edison tractor-trailer accident attorney as soon as possible to protect their legal rights.
