The Michigan Department of Transportation is hiring workers to help maintain the Mackinac Bridge.
Some of these positions include working atop the bridge’s 552-foot twin towers, which offer an unparalleled vista of the Straits’ two Great Lakes, Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, St. Ignace and both Michigan peninsulas.
Bridge maintenance positions pay between $18.47 and $25.96 per hour. Steeplejack employees can earn between $18.47 and $29.02 per hour.
Employees will work at the St. Ignace or Engadine garage from the end of October until mid-April before the job changes to a bridge worker from mid-April until the end of October.
Steeplejacks will perform maintenance, repairs and follow all safety regulations over water ways and above 300 feet. Duties include sandblasting, painting, washing, greasing, oiling, bolting, caulking, forming, cement work and inspections of the Mackinac Bridge using various tools, and equipment.
Both jobs will require applicants to climb steel to unusual heights and rig scaffolding in difficult and dangerous situations, climb tall ladders, bend and stoop in confined areas, work with heights over water and work in heavy traffic and inclement weather.
